Mould Mite Remediation

If you have experienced mould that requires mould remediation services, call us on 01622 926 505 for assistance.

OBJECTIVE

Our client’s property had become damaged by mould infestation while being held for eight weeks within a storage facility. A mite species that feeds on mould, Tyrophagus putrescentiae, had infested the apartment. The client had attempted to clean their possessions unsuccessfully and was suffering health effects. Attempts to use hired air filtration equipment were unsuccessful as the units provided were unclean, inadequate and ineffective. The situation became urgent as the infestation was adversely affecting the client’s possessions and health, with potentially serious consequences. Ideal Response were required to provide a fast and effective specialist mould removal service in Kent.

OUR BRIEFING

Our client required analysis of the extent of the damage, accurate and reliable testing followed by effective remediation techniques and specialist mould removal equipment to eradicate the problem. The work needed to be completed within one week. An independent mould specialist was appointed to establish the presence of white mould, mould mites and spores throughout the apartment. A visual inspection of the items were undertaken by Ideal Response with the client present, to identify possessions that have sustained extensive damage and, thus, been rendered unsalvageable. Safe, licensed, disposal of the items were required. The client had attempted to clean the mould using ‘off the shelf’ mould products and bleach but experienced significant side effects and unsatisfactory results.

THE TECHNICAL PART

Appropriate PPE was worn throughout the mould cleaning service. When dealing with mould spores it is recommend, by the UK Government, to use FFP3 rated face masks. The ratings include FFP1, FFP2 and FFP3. The higher the number the better the protection for the user. To remain cautious, our technicians always wear a white over suit, disposable gloves and shoe protectors when dealing with toxic substances such as mould.

Samples of air and surface swabs were taken prior to treatment using a fast and effective swab testing method. ATP testing measures growing organisms through detection of Adenosine Tri-phosphate (ATP). This testing process is quantified by measuring the number of Relative Light Units (RLU) produced through a reaction with a naturally occurring enzyme. The acceptable level of these Relative Light Units varies for different environments. For example, a public area would pass with an RLU count that is < 100. A high density public area would require a result that has a count of < 50 and food preparation sites would require even stricter standards with a count of no more than 10-20 RLU.

This informs our technicians on the precise requirements of the clean and provides evidence of its validity. An initial assessment was carried out on all affected items to identify items for disposal. Ideal Response technicians provided an effective manual clean of all items to permanently remove mould and mould mites.

Once cleaning was completed our technicians provided BioSweep decontamination to ensure 100% decontamination, air purification and permanent odour removal. As part of the documentation process, photographs were taken before, during and upon completion of the remediation process. After the manual clean the area was sealed and treated with BioSweep decontamination to eradicate all airborne spores and decontaminants and to permanently neutralise odour from the apartment.
