Large-scale Chewing Gum Removal and Pavement Cleaning

The Brief

Luton Borough Council invited Ideal Response to tender for a one-off, time sensitive cleaning project within their town centre. The council was planning various events towards the end of the year, including Christmas markets within St Georges Square. So it was imperative that the project was completed on time.

Accumulated over a long period of time, Luton’s town centre pavements had suffered a build up of unsightly chewing gum and grime.

The brief clearly outlined the following:

  1. Remove chewing gum and conduct thorough cleaning of pavements across a specific radius.
  2. Minimise disruption to the public and commercial properties within the affected areas.
  3. Ensure the project is completed on time.

Scope of Work Required

In order to effectively respond and meet the brief, our senior technicians conducted a site survey to define the full scope of work. Our team established that 14,500+ square metres of paved stone block required chewing gum removal and cleaning.

Conducting the survey also provided our team with a clear understanding of the equipment and number of technicians required to complete the work on time.

As part of the proposal, we also produced a statement of works (SoW) and a risk assessment method statement (RAMs).

In order to minimise disruption to the public and commercial properties, we proposed that our technicians carry out the work during the evening and early hours of the morning.

Delivery

Prior to carrying out the scope of work, the authorities were approached for water provision. The necessary health and safety procedures were put in place to meet our RAMS. This included barriers, appropriate signage to alert and protect the public and operatives onsite. A team of six technicians were deployed for this project due to the scale and deadlines.

Our team opted to operate the Dirt Driver using Rotary Cleaners to remove chewing gum and clean the paved stone blocks. Using the Dirt Driver also allowed us to meet the project completion deadline. For some areas that had a stubborn build up of chewing gum, we opted to use the DOFF cleaning system.

The DOFF is a high pressured steam cleaning system where by you can control the temperature of the steam to tackle ‘hard to clean’ surfaces. Because it uses steam, it’s also environmentally friendly.

It took approximately 26 days to complete the project.

Testimonial

Phil Cunningham from Luton Council commented…

“We are more than happy to recommend Ideal Response for future street cleaning – they managed the programme of delivery very well and we’re really happy with the high standards they delivered. Thanks to Ideal Response, our paving is now restored to its former glory!”
