Why sewage problems are common in London properties

London still has quite antiquated drainage. Much of the capital still uses the Victorian combined sewers built in the 19th century. They carry rainwater and waste in the same pipes, and during heavy rain, these systems can be overloaded. Suddenly, the overflow can back up through drains and toilets into properties.

For basements and lower-ground flats, the concern is perhaps larger. London has a significant number of converted properties that sit below the level of the main sewer. This means waste cannot always drain away as it otherwise would and instead backs up during a blockage or surge. Just one backup can be enough to flood an entire floor with blackwater.

To add a further factor to the mix, London’s density is a problem too. In terraced properties and converted houses, several flats often share just one drain run, so a single blockage can affect multiple properties at once. With many restaurants, pubs, cafes and commercial kitchens lining London streets, fat, grease and food waste can also cause the system to backup.

Whatever the cause, sewage needs specialist cleaning to make the property safe again.

When to call a professional sewage cleaning company in London

Sewage cleaning is not something that should be attempted as a DIY project. The health and safety concerns, as well as the need to do the job properly, mean professional assistance is essential. If any of the below apply, contact our team:

  • Sewage or foul water has backed up through a toilet, drain or gully into your property.
  • There is standing backwater, or a drainage flood involving waste, in a basement, ground floor or flat.
  • A strong sewage smell, staining or contamination has spread beyond where the spill started.
  • The property is a home with children, elderly or vulnerable people or a business serving the public.
  • Several flats sharing a drain have been affected at once.
  • You need the area decontaminated, tested and documented for an insurer or environmental health.

How our sewage cleaning in London works

The Ideal Response sewage cleaning technicians in London work to a controlled, multi-stage process that removes contamination, ensures the area is safe and dries the property.

  1. After we receive your call and receive information about the issues, we’ll be dispatched quickly.
  2. Upon arrival, our team assesses the damage and puts the cleanup plan into place. Wearing full PPE, we extract all standing sewage and remove contaminated materials such as flooring, plasterboard and panelling. If it cannot be salvaged, we remove it and dispose of it safely and legally.
  3. Using powerful cleaning agents, such as Decon 7, and industry-leading technology, we sanitise and decontaminate the affected surfaces. We don’t stop there though; we use additional equipment to ensure all lingering odours are removed, and any airborne contaminants are eliminated.
  4. We then conduct ATP testing. This measures how much adenosine triphosphate there is. This is an active growing microorganism; our testing should confirm the surfaces are now clean and safe.
  5. To finish the job, we will dry the property with commercial dehumidifiers and drying equipment, monitoring the moisture levels to ensure they return to safe levels.

As we work, we’ll document what we do with photos, readings and test results, allowing you and your insurer clear evidence that sewage cleaning has corrected the problems and the appropriate standards have been met.

London sewage cleaning case study

Contaminated platerboard in the basement of a London restaurant

We were called to a busy London restaurant after a sewage backup flooded its basement with blackwater. Blackwater carries human waste and is the most hazardous category of contamination. It had soaked into the basement floor, wall cavities and flooring, threatening to spread up to the ground floor where staff and customers were.

We extracted the standing sewage and built a temporary partition between the basement and ground floor to stop cross-contamination. This enabled the restaurant to continue trading while we worked.

We cleaned and sanitised every surface with Decon 7, ran air scrubbers and confirmed the results with ATP swab testing.

Heavily contaminated flooring and plasterboard were stripped out, and the space was fogged and then dried over two weeks until humidity and moisture were back within safe British Standard levels. The basement was returned fully decontaminated, verified safe and operational, with minimal disruption to the business. How quickly can you respond to a sewage spill in London?
We attend quickly (teams are dispatched within 1 to 2 hours of your call); as with sewage, it matters. We operate 24 hours a day, 365 days a year and attend as quickly as possible to contain the contamination and reduce any health risk. Call us the moment you spot a backup, and our team will respond quickly.
Will my insurance cover sewage cleaning in London?
In many cases, yes. However, cover varies between providers and policies, so always check before you make a claim. We document the contamination and the clean-up with photos, readings and test results to make the claims process much more straightforward.
How do you make a property safe after a sewage spill?
We contain the area, extract the sewage, and remove contaminated materials for safe disposal. We then sanitise every surface with professional disinfectants and confirm the result with ATP swab testing. We’ll then dry the property until moisture levels are safe.
Why do London basements flood with sewage so often?
Many London basement and lower-ground flats sit below the main sewer. This means waste cannot always drain naturally. Combine that with the old, combined drains, which overflow in heavy rain, and backups can become common.
