London sits on some of the hardest water in the country. Thames Water draws its supply from chalk aquifers, giving London tap water approximately 250 to 350 mg per litre of calcium carbonate, well above the level at which limescale becomes a problem and among the hardest water supplied to any city in Europe . That constant scaling shortens the life of boilers, pipework and appliance hoses. A failed washing machine hose in a converted flat, for example, can run through the ceilings below long before anyone returns from work or wakes up in the morning.
The capital is also home to an older housing stock than many other areas. Victorian and Edwardian homes line many streets, with some split into flats or HMOs. This means ageing plumbing rarely affects just one property.
Surface water flooding is the largest flood risk in London. The Environment Agency puts around 320,000 London properties in the high-risk category for flooding . For reference, flash floods in 2021 hit 24 London boroughs in a matter of hours.

Environmental services
We respond rapidly to oil spills , chemical spills , and hazardous waste incidents across London. Our case study from an incident in Hyde Park is one such example.
One Friday night, a major oil spill closed a road running through Hyde Park, one of the busiest green spaces in Central London. A Netflix documentary was due to be filmed there in just a few hours, so speed was of the essence. The spill posed environmental risks to the park's soil and waterways whilst also delaying the documentary's production schedule.
Our team was on site within two hours. With no power or water at the location, we worked through the night using a diesel-powered hot washer as both a water source and a generator. This was paired with rotary scrubbers and industrial wet vacuums to lift the oil and collect the waste for responsible disposal. Local police also provided valuable assistance by closing the road to help keep the public and our crew safe.
By 3 am, the road was fully cleared with no lasting environmental impact. The park reopened for the weekend, and filming went ahead as planned. Read the full Netflix oil spill case study for the detail.
London customers usually come to us in the middle of something sudden and disruptive. We were contacted by Ray in Brentford regarding an oil spill:
“Had an oil spill from a van in the road in front of car park and delivery entrance, quite a busy area with vehicles and pedestrians, contacted Ideal and received a first class service.”
