The Situation: Urgent external sewage spill in BN21
Ideal Response was contacted to manage a critical sewage spill within an external courtyard of a property in Eastbourne. A significant drainage failure had resulted in widespread raw sewage flooding the area. The situation was particularly time-sensitive as the client had previously booked another provider who failed to attend at the last minute, leaving the property in a hazardous state.
In managed commercial or residential environments, an unaddressed sewage spill is a major biohazard. We mobilised an emergency team immediately to ensure the health and safety of the occupants and to restore the property to a hygienic condition without further delay.
Health and safety / RAMS
The presence of raw sewage in a courtyard environment presented several immediate risks that required specialist mitigation:
- Pathogen exposure: Direct danger from harmful bacteria, viruses, and biological contaminants found in raw sewage.
- Environmental pollution: High risk of contaminants entering surface water drainage systems.
- Aerosolisation: The risk of fine, contaminated particulates becoming airborne during the cleaning process.
- Physical hazards: Slip and trip risks caused by contaminated standing water and sludge.
The technical challenge
The project involved several logistical hurdles. The contamination had spread extensively across external surfaces, and the courtyard itself offered restricted access, complicating the deployment of large-scale equipment. Additionally, ongoing seepage from the drainage system required immediate containment to prevent the spill from migrating to adjoining areas or public footways.

The Solution: Rapid decontamination & sanitisation
Our technicians arrived on-site and immediately established a safe working perimeter. To ensure the area was rendered safe for normal use, the following multi-stage sewage cleaning process was implemented:
- Containment & PPE: Technicians were equipped with full Type 5/6 disposable coveralls, double-nitrile gloves, and FFP3 respirators. Spill containment booms and drain covers were deployed to prevent environmental runoff.
- Waste extraction: Utilising high-powered wet and dry extraction units alongside manual hand tools, all contaminated water, sludge, and debris were safely removed.
- Specialist cleaning: A pressure wash was performed using a professional-grade degreasing detergent to strip away organic residues from the porous courtyard surfaces.
- EN-Compliant disinfection: The entire area was treated with an approved biocidal solution to neutralise all remaining pathogens. Finally, an odour neutraliser was applied to eliminate lingering smells.
The Results: Same-Day Restoration
The remediation was successfully completed within a single day. By providing an urgent response when the previous contractor failed, Ideal Response ensured the courtyard was fully restored to professional safety standards.
All waste was removed and disposed of via licensed waste carrier procedures. The client expressed high satisfaction with the results, noting that the area was left clean, sanitised, and safe for occupants to return to.
