The Problem

When people hear the term “oil spill”, they often think of major environmental disasters, such as the 2010 BP spill or industrial accidents. However, smaller-scale oil spills happen every day in the UK – more than one oil spill occurs on UK roads daily, leading to serious environmental and health risks.

An oil spill isn’t just an eyesore; it poses significant hazards:

  • Environmental damage – Oil suffocates plants, prevents soil from absorbing moisture, contaminates water sources, and harms wildlife.
  • Health risks – Exposure to oil can cause skin irritation, eye problems, headaches, dizziness, respiratory issues, and even long-term endocrine disorders.
  • Safety hazards – Oil makes surfaces dangerously slippery, increasing the risk of accidents and injuries.

The Hydraulic Oil Spill in Redhill

When one of the UK’s leading waste management providers discovered a large hydraulic oil spill at their Redhill facility, they knew the situation required immediate expert intervention.

The spill had spread across a concrete driveway, and due to the autumn season, fallen leaves had become soaked in oil, complicating the clean-up process. If left untreated, the spill could spread further, create a serious slipping hazard, and cause lasting damage to the environment.

With no time to waste, they called Ideal Response, a trusted partner known for fast, effective, and environmentally responsible oil spill clean-up.

The Solution

We understand that acting fast is crucial in oil spill situations. Our expert team was on-site within hours, ready to tackle the problem head-on and provide our oil spill clean-up expertise.

Step 1: Containing & Removing Surface Oil

The priority was to prevent further contamination by removing as much standing oil as possible.

  • Specialist ‘wet vacs’ were used to extract the oil from the concrete surface, preventing it from spreading further.
  • All collected oil was stored in sealed containers for safe disposal according to UK environmental regulations.

Step 2: Handling Oil-Contaminated Leaves

The combination of oil and wet leaves created a hazardous situation, making manual removal necessary.

  • Our team used specialist brushes and manual collection methods to safely remove the oil-soaked leaves.
  • Staff wore full PPE, including gloves, respirators, and coveralls, to minimise exposure to hazardous substances.

Step 3: Deep Cleaning & Decontamination

Once the bulk of the oil was removed, it was time to tackle the stubborn oil residue left on the surface.

  • We applied OT8, a powerful yet environmentally friendly degreaser, commonly used for road and driveway oil spills.
  • After OT8 had broken down the oil deposits, the area was rinsed with water, and wet vacs were used again to remove any remaining liquid.

This thorough, multi-step process ensured that no trace of oil remained, restoring the site to a safe, clean condition.

The Result

Thanks to our rapid response and expert clean-up methods, the oil spill was completely removed, leaving the site safe, dry, and environmentally secure.

  • 100% of the visible oil was eliminated
  • No hazardous residues left behind
  • Slipping hazards fully removed
  • All waste disposed of responsibly

The before-and-after photos speak for themselves—the transformation was remarkable. The client, a long-standing partner, was extremely satisfied with the results, reinforcing their trust in Ideal Response’s reliability and expertise.
