Urgent basement mould remediation for Central London pub

The Situation: A growing threat to business continuity

A prominent pub in London, discovered an extensive mould infestation within their basement storage area. Given the nature of the hospitality industry, the presence of mould presented a triple threat: a health and safety risk to staff, the potential contamination of beverage products, and the risk of spores spreading into the public-facing areas of the pub.

With the business needing to remain operational, the management required an urgent, non-disruptive solution to eradicate the mould before it impacted their service or stock.

The Challenge: Time-sensitive remediation

The project presented several unique obstacles for the Ideal Response team:

  • Significant spore spread: The mould had colonised a large surface area, requiring methodical removal to prevent airborne migration.
  • Strict timeframes: To minimise business downtime, all works had to be completed within a single day while the pub was closed to the public.
  • Deep staining: Over time, the mould had caused significant staining on the basement surfaces, requiring specialist chemical treatment to restore the aesthetic and structural integrity of the walls.

The Solution: A professional decontamination strategy

Our technicians arrived on-site and immediately implemented a full Risk Assessment and Method Statement (RAMS) to ensure the safety of the environment.

1. Protective Measures

Operatives were equipped with full professional PPE, including white disposable coveralls and respiratory protection, to ensure safety during the high-concentration spore removal.

2. HEPA Vacuuming

The team utilised industrial-grade HEPA (High-Efficiency Particulate Air) vacuums to remove surface-level spores. Unlike standard vacuums, HEPA filtration ensures that 99.97% of microscopic spores are captured and not recirculated into the air.

3. Antimicrobial Sanitisation

Following the removal of physical growth, the team applied specialist biocidal chemicals to decontaminate and sanitise the affected areas. This step targeted the deep staining and ensured the root of the mould was neutralised.

4. ULV Fogging

As a final safeguard, the entire room was treated via ULV (Ultra-Low Volume) Fogging. This dispersed a fine biocidal mist that reached every corner and crevice, killing any remaining airborne contaminants and preventing future regrowth.

The Outcome: Business as usual

The project was completed within the strict one-day timeframe. By the end of the shift, the basement was verified as safe, decontaminated, and free of mould. The pub owner was delighted with the results, particularly the removal of heavy staining, and was able to resume full use of the room immediately.
