The Problem: Oil spill outside of a commercial building

The owner of a commercial premises faced a highly stressful and urgent crisis after a heating oil spill spread from their property onto the main road. The oil spill posed immediate and serious risks: it was a significant slip hazard for pedestrians and traffic, a danger of contamination spread, and the situation had led to angry neighbours demanding immediate action to avoid potential legal repercussions. The entire area needed to be closed off and decontaminated instantly.

The Solution: Emergency degreasing and oil spill clean-up

Ideal Response mobilised a specialist hazardous spill response team immediately. Upon arrival, our operatives’ first priority was securing the site. The area was cordoned off to manage traffic and pedestrian flow safely, in accordance with our strict RAMS (Risk Assessments and Method Statements).

Fully suited in Level-3 PPE and white overalls, the team began the decontamination process. We utilised a Dirt Driver high-pressure cleaning system in combination with specialised degreasing chemicals to break down and lift the surface oil. A thorough jet wash was then used to meticulously clean all hard surfaces outside the properties affected by the contamination, ensuring all traces of oil were removed to safety standards.

Obstacles overcome

The operation presented several key difficulties, primarily driven by the public location and the need for speed:

  1. Traffic and public safety: The clean-up had to be coordinated seamlessly with ongoing traffic and pedestrian flow on a main road, requiring constant vigilance and careful use of isolation barriers.
  2. Urgent neighbour pressure: The immediate and intense pressure from upset neighbours required the job to be executed with maximum urgency to de-escalate the situation and prevent legal action.
  3. Preventing contamination spread: We had to work methodically to contain the spill and prevent the oil from travelling further down the road or entering surface water drains.

The Outcome

The swift, professional, and targeted cleaning process successfully eliminated the widespread oil contamination. The main road and surrounding pavements were restored to safety standards, removing the slip hazard and resolving the immediate tension with the neighbours. The customer was extremely satisfied, avoiding both potential legal action and further community stress due to the emergency response.
